The Banning of Political Parties in Post-Yugoslav States. Croatian and Serbian Experience in Using Militant Democracy
(Taylor & Francis, 2024) Skrzypek, Maciej
The aim of this paper is to explore the effectiveness of a classical militant democracy instrument, as banning of extremist parties since the beginning of the political transition in 1990s in post-Yugoslav states. Comparative studies are based on Croatian and Serbian experiences, when since political transition new types of political regimes started developing as part of a boom for national parties that could guarantee consolidation of the state. The methods employed for the analysis are the qualitative analysis of sources. Corpus of sources includes national legislation, official documents, NGOs’ reports, and media content related to banning political entities. Conclusions from the study provide knowledge fill the gap in the state of art about circumstances for dissolving anti-democratic entities in the post-Yugoslav states. Moreover, they allow to verify relevant approaches and models of anti-democratic organizations, encompassing the specific types of political culture in Croatia and Serbia.

Between waves and patterns: Spin wave freezing in films with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction
(American Physical Society, 2023-04-12) Kisielewski, Jan; Gruszecki, Paweł; Krawczyk, Maciej; Zablotskii, Vitalii; Maziewski, Andrzej
The relationship between waves and static pattern formation is an intriguing effect and remains unexplained in many areas of physics, including magnetism. We study the spin-wave-mediated spin reorientation transition (SRT) in magnetic films with uniaxial magnetic anisotropy and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI). In particular, we show that propagating spin waves can freeze in the SRT, causing periodic magnetic domains to arise, which is reminiscent of the wave amplitude distribution. This process can take place under the influence of a change in the magnetic field, but also of other parameters. Interestingly, at the SRT, DMI nonreciprocity leads to the emergence of flowing magnetization patterns, which suggests a spontaneous breaking of translational symmetry, and the formation of magnonic space-time crystals. The described phenomena are general and should take place in a large family of magnetic materials. Therefore, the results should be of great importance for the further development of spintronics and magnonics.

Salsa and the (Eternal) City. Rethinking the pleasure periphery
(Taylor & Francis Group, 2023-08-10) Ruxandra, Ana
This article takes as a starting point one of the classic metaphors in tourism studies, the ‘pleasure periphery’, in order to examine how the embodied labour of subaltern bodies establishes a regime of recognition, visibility, and value. Situated at the intersections of transnational migration, social mobility, and bodily work, this analysis follows the professional and personal trajectories of Cuban dancers in Europe. I discuss the various forms of exclusion that emerge at the intersection of dance consumerism, assumptions about migrant belongings, and hierarchies of performance practices. The ‘pleasure periphery’ serves as a spatial and symbolic metaphor that gives insight into the pivotal role of Cuban dance and music for the transnational dance scene, while shedding light on how peripheralization is reshaped and reproduced in migratory contexts. The transnational contexts of dance labour bring into focus the tensions between its emancipatory potential for Cuban performers and the perpetuation of consumption patterns and business strategies that reify peripherality on various levels (spatial, symbolic, and affective). The article is based on ethnographic fieldwork conducted in Havana, Cuba, and Rome, Italy among Cuban professional dancers and dance educators.

Competition, cooperation, and parental effects in larval aggregations formed on carrion by communally breeding beetles Necrodes littoralis (Staphylinidae: Silphinae)
(Wiley, 2024-03-14) Lis, Natalia; Mądra-Bielewicz, Anna; Wydra, Jędrzej; Matuszewski, Szymon
Aggregations of juveniles are the dominant forms of social life in some insect groups. Larval societies are shaped by competitive and cooperative interactions of the larvae, in parallel with parental effects. Colonies of necrophagous larvae are excellent systems to study these relationships. Necrodes littoralis (Staphylinidae: Silphinae), a carrion beetle that colonizes cadavers of large vertebrates, forms massive juvenile aggregations. By spreading over carrion anal and oral exudates, the beetles form the feeding matrix, in which the heat is produced and by which adults affect the fitness of the larvae. We predict that exploitative competition shapes the behaviour of N. littoralis larvae in their aggregations. However, cooperative interactions may also operate in these systems due mainly to the benefits of collective exodigestion. Moreover, indirect parental effects (i.e. formation of the feeding matrix) probably modulate larval interactions within the aggregations. By manipulating parental effects (present/absent) and larval density (0.02-1.9 larvae/1 g of meat), we found a strong negative group-size effect on the fitness of N. littoralis, in colonies with parental effects over almost the entire density range, and in colonies without parental effects for densities larger than 0.5 larva/g. This was accompanied by positive group-size effects in terms of development time (it shortened with larval density) and thermogenesis (it increased with larval density). A pronounced positive group-size effect on juvenile fitness was found only in colonies without parental effects and only in the low density range. These results support the hypothesis that larval societies of N. littoralis are shaped by exploitation competition.

Deep into the niche: Deciphering local endoderm-microenvironment interactions in development, homeostasis, and disease of pancreas and intestine
(Wiley Periodicals LLC, 2023-03-04) Szlachcic, Wojciech J; Letai, Katherine C; Scavuzzo, Marissa; Borowiak, Małgorzata
Unraveling molecular and functional heterogeneity of niche cells within the developing endoderm could resolve mechanisms of tissue formation and maturation. Here, we discuss current unknowns in molecular mechanisms underlying key developmental events in pancreatic islet and intestinal epithelial formation. Recent breakthroughs in single-cell and spatial transcriptomics, paralleled with functional studies in vitro, reveal that specialized mesenchymal subtypes drive the formation and maturation of pancreatic endocrine cells and islets via local interactions with epithelium, neurons and microvessels. Analogous to this, distinct intestinal niche cells regulate both epithelial development and homeostasis throughout life. We propose how this knowledge can be used to progress research in the human context using pluripotent stem cell-derived multilineage organoids. Overall, understanding the interactions between the multitude of microenvironmental cells and how they drive tissue development and function could help us make more therapeutically relevant in vitro models.

Postawy nauczycieli szkół podstawowych w sektorze arabskim w Izraelu wobec integracji uczniów ze specjalnymi potrzebami
(2024) Majadly, Enas; Jaskulska, Sylwia. Promotor
Placówki kształcenia nauczycieli powinny poszerzyć zakres kursów i kształcenia praktycznego w zakresie pedagogiki specjalnej. The purpose of the study is to examine the perceptions of 250 teachers regarding the full inclusion of students with special needs. The research included obtaining comments from public education teachers in primary schools in the Arab sector in Israel. The findings of the study confirm the behavioral-value support of teachers from the Arab sector in the integration of children with SEN in normal frameworks, but also limitations in the level of teachers'knowledge of the subject, as well as personal reluctance of teachers to apply it in their classroom. The attitudes of teachers in the Arab sector are influenced by the level of education of the teachers, so that teachers with a higher level of education are more likely to have a lower emotional openness towards the integration of students with SEN in ordinary settings, when this means that these teachers are often more sober about the gap between the expectations of a successful integration and their personal ability to successfully complete such a project. The training process has a significant impact on teachers' attitudes towards the integration of students with SEN. The findings of the study indicate an indirect effect of this training process on the level of knowledge and the emotional-subjective openness of teachers towards integration, which is a product of the improvement in the behavioral and value support of teachers in the sector. To change the limiting perception towards students with SEN, A perceptual change that begins in education is required, but this also requires openness among the teachers themselves. Teachers’ training institutions should expand the range of courses and practical training in the field of special education.

Formy wsparcia edukacyjnego dzieci polskich imigrantów w norweskiej szkole
(2024) Domagalska-Nowak, Karolina; Boroń, Aleksandra. Promotor; Hejwosz-Gromkowska, Daria. Promotor pomocniczy
Rozprawa doktorska podejmuje temat wsparcia dzieci polskich imigrantów w norweskiej szkole. The doctoral thesis investigates the educational support for children of Polish immigrants in the Norwegian school system. Given the cultural diversity of Norwegian society, fueled by both its internal ethnic diversity and external migrations – with Poles constituting a significant group since 2004 - the social policy of this multicultural state aims towards ensuring equal access to education for all children. Norway's educational policy, which adopts an inclusive model of education, fosters a school environment supportive of students from diverse backgrounds. Educational support for migrant children in Norway encompasses a range of actions, including both institutional and individual activities, such as teacher-led projects designed to create a school atmosphere that promotes equality of opportunity in education and social integration. The Author's own research, designed and conducted in a qualitative strategy, focused on understanding the opinions of parents of Polish immigrant children regarding the forms of educational support their children receive in Norwegian schools. A purposive sampling of informants was employed. Based on the analysis of the collected research material, the Author interpreted the statements to show how the parents participating in the study perceive the forms of educational support available to their children in the Norwegian educational system at the level of compulsory education.

Nowe metody i zbiory danych do inteligentnego przetwarzania dokumentów
(2024) Jurkiewicz, Dawid; Graliński, Filip. Promotor
Rozprawa podejmuje dwa kluczowe obszary w ramach dziedziny inteligentnego przetwarzania dokumentów (ang. Intelligent Document Processing): identyfikację relewantnych fragmentów tekstu (ang. Span Identification) i problematykę rozumienia dokumentów (ang. Document Understanding). This thesis aims to contribute innovative solutions and datasets to the Intelligent Document Processing (IDP) domain. The focus is set on two key areas within IDP: Span Identification (SI) and Document Understanding (DU). Significant emphasis is placed on addressing the challenges posed by low-data scenarios, which are prevalent in various business use cases. A few-shot SI dataset and a unique approach for sub-sequence matching with few examples are proposed to address this. Besides the few-shot setting, methods for identifying and classifying propaganda spans are presented. Furthermore, a multi-modal end-to-end Transformer-based model for Document Understanding is introduced. The model efficiently comprehends layout information, textual semantics, and visual cues present in the document and can answer various document-related questions posed in the natural language. Additionally, the first DU benchmark is proposed, allowing the community to measure the DU field's state accurately. Lastly, a challenging DU competition is showcased. The task features novel question and answer type pairs over multi-domain, multi-industry, and multi-page documents, encouraging the development of solutions with strong generalization capabilities in low-data regimes.

Młodzi dorośli w dobie cyfryzacji. Wyzwania współczesności
(2024) Pawlaczyk, Jonasz; Dylak, Stanisław. Promotor
Dużą wagę poświęcono samej technologii i cyfryzacji codzienności. Young adults (18-35) are people who were born and grew up in a unique time when new technologies entered everyone's life and slowly strengthened their dominant position in everyday routine. The world they live in is characterized by great variability and uncertainty. In many cases, as they grew up, they were released into the world without adequate preparation because there were no role models. There were also no safeguards prepared to protect them against the negative effects of technology. They were therefore brought up in a new environment using old methods and patterns. This work draws attention to the problems that young adults have to face. The considerations include various beliefs and stereotypes about young adults, the reality of the idea of digital natives, new habits, and social desires. The issue of adulthood and its markers, the importance of social media and their role in shaping the opinions of their users, the spread of fake news, and the general information flood are discussed. The work outlines the image of the modern world, its general characteristics - globality, uncertainty, variability - and the problems associated with them. Much attention was paid to technology itself and the digitization of everyday life. What is most important to young adults and what views they have on the modern world have been demonstrated by two studies. The first one involved the analysis of Internet memes, while the second one was based on the statements of the authors of informal essays.
